When I was younger several guys at hunting camp down south had well worn M-740's. I was always told that the 742 was more accurate, seems it had something to do with the barrel to action arrangement, not sure. Anyway the 740's looked more substancial to me than the later versions and numbers but most likely this was an impression based on appearance only. I have not seem one in years.

I have a 740 30'06 I inherited from my dad, passed down from my grandfather (his dad, obviously). I shot two (an 8 pt and 6 pt) this past season with it. This gun has been used to put down many, many deer over the past 50 years. I have left it as is (no new synthetic stocks, no new var. high power scope), just the old Weaver 4x on it. Excellent gun-and priceless to me.
