Health probs predicate a hand guin for elk and mulies + whitetails in the east. What would be the mose effective caliber with the least recoil and the ability to harvest and elk at a reasonable range. Also is a variable or fixed scope the best option. Gimpy, TN

I'm not sure on TN hunting laws OH only allows straight walled handgun ammunition a 357 mag works well on whitetails here if TN allows I would get a Thompson Center Encore pistol chambered in 270 win it will drop deer and elk and the recoil is still managable even in the pistol
