I would suggest a .223 or 22-250 also. You get a lot more coyotes if you can reach out to 200 yards or more effectively. They are great for any varmints out to 600 yards.

i prefer a 22-250 only because i have a rather sweet custom rifle that happens to be in 22-250... but i also like the 223.

I think I would stay with my .223. The rifle selection is endless and the .223 ammo supply seems to be plentiful. I think it has enough range to get the job done.

Small game and coyotes are not in the same rifle class. The rifle that is effective on coyotes will vaporize small game and the .22 lr that will put small game in the pot will not be effective on coyotes. 40 lb. yote vs. 2 lb. bunny,

Duh! When you said small I was thinking .22 caliber centerfires for some reason... both I mentioned are great varmint rounds. However, a 25-06 is my primary coyote and prairie dog rifle and I recommend it highly. I've shot a lot of bunnies with that cartridge too but you have to hit them through the ears about an inch above their head to kill them instantly but avoid blowing up meat. I shoot squirrels in the front foot and the hydrolic shock kills them instantly.
