    Hit the used rack at the local Lock-and-Load, and check out what's there. It's tough to wear out a rifle, especially in the mild calibers we're talking about here.
    Look for a 270, 308, 7mm-08 or 30-06. Lots of people are trading in perfectly good rifles in "mortal" calibers because (they think)short-magnums are magic. Right now lots of folks are selling stuff to pay their taxes or keep the lights on, and others are selling their hunting rifles for varmint rigs.

    TWD is right-on, go shooting with anyone you can, and see what you like best.
    Then listen up between paydays when your buds are running out of cash, and they have a rifle to sell, often times you can pick-up the whole rig (rifle, scope, sling, ammo) for 50 cents on the dollar, and that's about what a pawn-shop is going to pay your buddy for it too, so don't feel bad.
