  • EST value of old 1894

I hav e an old 1894, kind of a family heirloom at this point. Curious as to much much it’s worth, without paying to get it appraised. I remember dad telling me he was offered $15,000 a dozen or so years ago by George Madis himself. I do have the papers for it, but it came with every possible custom option available at the time I believe.

Bigbrawn: Please send photos and the story of this gun to Phil Bijourlay, the Field and Stream shotgun editor at fsgunnuts@gmail.com. Every Friday he runs a "Blast From The Past" blog on the main site that features unusual old guns, especially if they have family history and are rare pieces like this. I'd love to see the story and photos show up there. He will also likely be able to help with finding an appraiser. Or someone looking at the blog may be able to send him some information. It's all discreet (he will use your profile name in the story) so no worries about security.

Offhand, I would say this gun is easily in the fifteen grand region. Even if you don't want to sell it (and I sure hope your family intends to keep it), you should get this gun officially appraised for insurance purposes. You cannot have something that valuable laying around uninsured.

      What Honk said.
      A VERY nice piece!

Note: when posting pictures of firearms online, don't show the serial number.
You never know when some sleaze ball might use the number to forge documents, not hard on today's computers, that could prove the gun was stolen from them or use it to track you down.
