Deciding on an AR-15 Scope

Howdy folks,

I have been doing quite a bit of searching for a suitable ar-15 scope and I would like to gather some opinions.

There was an article I was checking out on some scopes under $200 (which i can link on the bottom of the page) and it seemed like those were some pretty good options. I especially liked the Vortex scope since I don't really need too much range.

Have you folks used any of the scopes on this page?

I was just looking around Bronells and see they have a lot on clearance - some AR scopes have specific reticles and come with mounts. Free shipping ends soon.

General hunting and target, no speed games..........2-7X.
Good for non AR rifles too
Dunno what a Redfield Revolution w accurange reticle goes for now.
I prefer reg ol Duplex reticle.
If I wanted a micro reddot, Sig Romeo 5.

If you will be shooting 223/5.56, then the nikon m223 is a great scope. They also make the same scope in 308.

I've been building AR's about 10 years.
I've use the UTG "Bug Buster" scope.
Good points:
Cute, less than $200, compact.
Bad points:
They're just cheap. Cheap is as cheap does.
I have a Vortex 3-9×40 on my AR10.
Good points:
Less than $200, clear, accurate, U.S. service.
Bad points:
As good as it is, it still just isn't a high quality scope.
My AR15 6.8mm Rem SPC II wears a Leopold VX-Freedom 1.5-4×20 w/Pig Plex reticle.
Good points:
Everything about it.
It's small size looks great on the rifle.
All the magnification needed for up close or within 200 yard shots.
Clear and sharp.
Bad points: (?)
Not sure there are any?
It's up in that $200 range.

Is your AR "home build" or "off the shelf"?

Read your link. I suppose any of this could work for you.
My preference for an AR arebthe shorter scopes. I had a Leupold VX-I 3-9×40 on an AR. Worked great, just looked out of balance to me.
I have OFS (old fart syndrome!) too! LOL!
I don't care for lighted reticles, batteries and excessive gee-gaws and doodads.

IMO a Leopold Freedom 1-4X or 2-7X are outstanding AR scopes. Unless a person plans to shoot small targets at long range 7X magnification is more than adequate and 4X is certainly sufficient for medium to large game out to a few hundred yards. Larger scopes than that reduce field of view and add weight, both of which are liabilities.

It would look good, but it only has a 35' fov whereas the 2-7X has a 44' fov. And then there's the 1-4X20 with its 74' fov...

How much field of view do you need?
How much magnification do you need?
Everything is a compromise.

One could clock a reflex like some folks do if they want max field of view, and have a scope for longer range.

Never tried that.

Coyotes or deer w an AR, 2-7X seems right.
Yotes and chucks..........3-9X w AO
PD's on an AR built for such...........even more X's.

Ask Diane Fienstien I beleive what you are looking for is a blackhawk super concealed heat seeking tomahawk night vision scope. You can probably upgrade to the ghost model that is all plastic for about 2 dollars.

We mace "scopes" for our rubber band guns as kids.
Way less than 2 dollars

I'm thinking a .350 Legend AR build, w Steiner T5Xi.
Guy at shooting club had that scope......not cheap.
But I really dig it.

Other scope interested in, the SWFA SS 6X.
But that for maybe a heavier longer range rifle of some sort.

Depends on what you want to do with it. For general hunting applications a 3-9x40 is fine and will allow you to shoot varmints out to 600 yards. There are a couple I would recommend... the Nikon Prostaff with the Nikoplex reticle allows you to use precise holdovers for longer range precision that most people think is even possible with an AR. My buddy just picked one up on sale for $90 but they are $150 at optics planet. The 4-12x40 is great too for $180 at Optics Planet. The next choice is a Vortex Diamondback... a better scope with similar features and a larger field of view but smaller eye pupil... take you pick after looking through them.

If you want to shoot targets or varmints out to 600-1000 yards I recommend the Vortex Viper HS-T 6-24x50 but that costs more. I actually use Vipers on ARs because I can really aim fine for target shooting and varmint shooting. They will cost from $400-$1000 depending on model.
