I think the punishment is a little severe for a trip that does not appear to have smuggling of contraband as its main purpose.
Confiscation of the guns would have been more than enough punishment.

Perhaps he lives in Chicago and needs the firepower. Pretty sure Delbert Belton (88 year old WWII beaten to death) wishes he had stashed a pistol or two in his car.

I see some Florida dude was busted at the border crossing coming into Canada. They found not one or even two but four loaded handguns stashed at various locations in his motor home. One beside the bed, one under the driver seat, one under the couch, and yes, even had one stashed in the crapper. And a couple of cans of bear spray too (but I don't think that's illegal - not sure why the paper decided to mention it). Someone is a little paranoid! Buddy, you're coming to Canada not Mexico. He lost all the guns and $4,000. Looks like he'll be doing some jail time too. His fishing trip ended before it got started. For those who don't know, there is NO conceal carry up here ... anywhere. And they will ask you about guns when crossing the border. Don't lie to them. Especially if you're driving a motor home with camo seat covers. In the old days you could declare your handgun and they'd seal it up and ship it to your point of re-entry to US. But I think they stopped that a long time ago. Also, if you declare your guns and they turn you back, don't think you'll be able to sneak through at a nother crossing. They flag your plate into the system. I regularly move my guns across the border and I regularly get searched ... and I'm sure that's why. I have nothing to hide and am never in a hurry so they are always welcome to look.

Welcome!
