I just came in to posession of a Hatfield black powder .50 cal rifle, at a garage sale. It is in "pristine" condition. I do not believe that it is one of the Italian made but possible an original made by Hatfield. How can I tell, and what may be its worth. I can only describe it as a thing of beauty!

I have a Hatfield mountain rifle that cost 850 bucks brand new in 1994 IMS. Mine is a 50 cal caplock with a heavy octagon barrel and is a good shooter. The stock is curly maple stained dark brown. Rifling twist is best suited for round ball. I also had a Hatfield squirrel rifle it was around $500.

I bought my .50 cal. Hatfield, flintlock with birds-eye maple in 1979 through Cabalas for around $625.00. I have had to have the lock worked on no less than four times for everything from a broken main spring to re-tooling the sear. The front blade site is impossible to see in bright sunlight. But the rifle looks good over the fireplace.
