I like to collect replica black powder pistols. My most recent aquisition is a Bronze side by side muzzleloading derringer in .36 caliber smoothbore. I am wondering about safe powder charges for this pistol (as it is bronze not steel). I know the reccomended load for my 1858 remington revolver is 28 grains (and I usually load 25 grains), should 15 grains of black powder be sufficient for my bronze derringer? (without blowing it up in my hand?) I have a Kentucky pistol (.45) that I often load as much as 50 grains of powder in, but it has a steel barrel. Should I only load 10 grains? I will be shooting a patched ball and I am not expecting any sort of range or accuracy out of a side by side pistol without sights and a 3 inch barrel.

I always use a leveled off chapstick cap as a powder measure for my 1858. I wonder how much powder that is.
