There is a strain of rattlesnakes that have survived by virtue of their hereditary inability to rattle, which would call attention to their presence and lead to their demise.

It's good to know what to do. Rattlesnakes have been with us for a long time and hunters will see them quite often in their habitat. On an antelope hunt several years ago, my brother was struck three times in one day. None broke the skin as he had on good snake boots and tough pants. Four years ago, a rancher whose land we hunted died from a rattler bite. The friendly old codger who had spent over 60 years ranching, had been bitten over 30 times without incident by doing the right things. On his last one, the hospital accidentally administered an over dose of anti-venom and it killed him. Most of his bites came from handling the big round hay bales that you see across the midwestern prairies.

If you hunt that area, please stay away from those bales. Because they hold rodents and provide both shade and shelter for rattlers, they often contain at least one rattler who is quite protective of their unique shelter.
