With the new SPOT satelite tracker you can alert friends, family, or local emergency responders, that you need help and the will be able to get your exact GPS location. It also tracks your progress and can show where you are at on a computer so that if you aren't heard from in a while your family can send help.

I'm an emergency and trauma RN. With any injury you want to focus on the ABC's- Airway, Breathing and Circulation. A problem with any of these means imminent death. No use worrying about transporting out if you are dead. Once the ABC's are stabilized, then pull out your SPOT.

make sure your breathing and your blood is circulating and your wounds are closed ok set up camp for you give you a gun and leave you i guess until you can get help (if you dont have a spot)as long as you had fire and enouph wood you should be ok - bear meat if all goes well and the conditions are right it shouldnt take more then a week

Very good points above. I am in the health field so I would do what I can to stabilize the person, then use the SPOT.

IF we're 165 miles from the nearest anything, we likely have a rendezvous point to meet the airplane, where we were dropped off probably. First things first. Polar bear is dead, immediate threat is eliminated. Check for breathing, stop the bleeding, protect the wound and treat for shock. If I don't attend to these, yer a goner. Then we worry about getting you out. As per this SPOT thing, I guess I have to google it... Any gadget that gets us picked up ASAP wins its way into my bag on a dangerous, remote hunt, to be sure!

First things first KILL WHATEVER IS CAUSING THE BLEEDING. then you can apply whatever life saving tips these other guys recommend, my recomendation is to shoot it repeatedly with heavy bullets before it puts a paw on you....Just my oppinion

Stop the bleeding. Either use direct pressure, pressure points at the artery, or last chance a tourniquet. Call for help is the first thing after killing the animal. Try and keep you warm so you don't go into shock. Don't give you anything to drink. Assess the whole area of damaged tissue to determine the need for suiture (expedient if possible, not arterial bleeding).

I've taken wilderness first aid courses from teh Wilderness Medicine Institute because I had similar questions. What do you do when you or someone you are with is injured in a remote area? The answer has already been mentioned above. Stabilize first and worry about evacuation second. After stabilization, then plan to leave the area. It may take days, so you continue to monitor the ABCs of the person and keep moving, and rest when you need to. A fatigued, sick, or injured rescuer is a threat to you and others.
