There is a bill pending in Oregon that would permit hunting cougars with dogs.

The September 1993 issue of Shooting Times had an article by Rick Jameson about a fellow named Gary Hanson. Mr. Hanson was a full-time government hunter in western Colorado working under the Dept. of Agriculture. His job was going after livestock predators - bears, mountain lions, and coyotes. His method was to use dogs to chase down the problem animals and then go in to finish them with handgun. His choice was a Ruger single-action in .45 Colt with hot handloads. Here's a few of Hanson's quotations from the article:

"A single-action revolver is a good carrying gun, no matter what caliber it is. It feels good to me, and it points instinctively. I know that double-action revolvers are the thing today - you swing out the cylinder and reload quick - but the double action is temporarily out of commission with the cylinder swung out - and you risk dumping out any unfired cartridges with the empties."

Hanson liked a hot loaded .45 Colt over a .44 Magnum because he thought it was easier on his and the dogs' ears. I've duplicated some of his loads and have killed a few deer and pigs with my .45 single-action. The 300 grains are a handful and I've just stuck with 250's.

Here's a pic of one of Hanson's recovered bullets.
