    Hi...

There's a newer gizmo out now called the Life Straw. You can drink right out of the stream with it. Inexpensive...two for $24.00, I think.

Haven't tried it yet, but their propaganda sounds interesting.

I use an MSR Mini-Works EX. I went with it because the filter is ceramic, rather than paper, so it is field serviceable and you never have to carry an extra filter. I've only used it in the western hemisphere, but stagnant pools that would gag a moose come out tasting great.

The Katadyn is what I use on my backpacking trips, but I try not to rely on procuring water. It's always good to bring as much as you can,- I generally carry at least a gallon and a half if it's a multi nighter. If you want something that's even smaller, just strain some water through a fine woven material, and drop some iodine tablets in it or bleach. Liquid bleach is 5 drops per liter if I recall correctly. It's good to always have those in case of emergencies, but don't forget to let that stuff stand for at least a half hour after dropping the bleach/iodine tablets in there.

I used the Katadyn hiker mentioned above on my thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail every day. It is well worth the money($70ish) I only needed to replace the filter once so you should never have to. I just bought a new one this spring for emergencies but the old one still works fine after years of use. It takes the rusty taste out of well water too.

I have used Katadyn products for years all over the world in some pretty serious places as far as health is concerned. Never had a problem. Where they fit in as far as price range, I don't know.
