Would it harm an outboard motor to use the reverse gear as a brake at very low speeds?

  • #2
Starting to wonder that myself since you posted. Sometimes when Im coming into the docks or land to fast I’ll switch to reverse real quick to slow myself down.

People do it all the time. Just let the RPM's drop in neutral before shifting into reverse. Approach your dock slowly and it won't be an issue.

In the movies, the captain of the ship is always hollering "Full astern!"
Of course, this does not mean that a big switch somewhere is thrown.
It is only a command that could be followed by a number of slow manual operations, as actually happened on the Titanic before it struck the iceberg.

Also, on the big ships, I believe the propeller shafts turn in only one direction.
The angle of the blades is changed.

Ah, your question was about outboard motors. I've never heard of one with a variable pitch prop.

                Still probably not reversible.

Do you even have a boat???

I had a ski boat with a 6cyl in line Merc that was direct drive - 2 blade prop. Very high winding motor. To reverse you shut down the engine and started it in reverse. The distributor actually turned around to give the proper timing in reverse. Worked great once you were used to it. No drag from the lower unit on this motor.
