Tonight my old lab Pearl and I walked in to a brushy slough since the geese weren’t flying. I could hear quite a duck convention going on before we even started into the woods. Got the drop on a hundred or so and knocked down exactly a limit (whew!) of nice northern mallards in three shots. But I had a good mile and a half hike back to the Jimmy and my bird carrier was in the decoy bag in the vehicle. I have carpel tunnel in both hands and really can’t hang onto that many birds and carry my shotgun too. What to do? Make two trips? Ugh! Walking through the cut sorghum fields about wiped me out already. I detached my shotgun sling and doubled the long strap end back through the swivel to create a loop, then strung the ducks up together by the necks. I slung the bunch over my shoulder and wrapped the other end of the sling around my hand. Had to carry my gun under my arm or in my hand but hey I did that for nearly forty years before I finally discovered shotgun slings.
