It depends on what you consider long range. I believe that to hit effectively at long range, you have to be able to see your target precisely. A 4.5-14x40 is fine out to about 500 yards. If you are operating beyond that range, I'd suggest a 6.5-20x40 for higher magnification. I can center my cross hairs on a 3 inch dot at 1000 yards with mine. For long range hunting, I highly recommend the mil-dot reticle for multiple hold-over and windage points for quick shots. With a little practice, you can also range pretty well with them. Speed is often of the essence and you can range and shoot faster with them than just about any other method including use of a range finder.
For long range, you want zero parallax (cross hair stays centered on impact point as you move your head behind the scope) so that eliminates a lot of low cost scopes from the competition. You should be able to find a used Leupold on ebay or gunbroker.com in your price range and that would be best. If you need to buy a new scope, a Vortex Viper will provide you the most bang for the buck so to speak. Their 6.5-20x is a 30mm tube so it will be a little heavier but that is not always bad. It's an amazing scope for that price and will serve you very well.

Also, what's a good long range scope. I'm thinking I don't want to spend more than $500 on a scope. I am considering some tactic

leupold VXIII in 3.5x10x40 should fit in the 500 dollar price range and is an EXCELLENT scope for damn near any hunting situation apart from picking off varmints at 500 yards. it will serve you quite well on a 30-06.

Check out a Leupold VXII 6x18 target scope. You can get a fine cross hair or a target dot. If I had just $500 that's what I would get.
