What is the difference between IM6, IM7 and IM8 graphite blank rods?

  • #2
I think those numbers refer to the tensile modulus ratings of graphite rod blanks. The IM8 has about 47 million modules, the IM7 has 42 million and the IM6 has 38 million. Standard graphite has about 33 million modules.
The higher the module rating, the better the performance, but the down side is greater susceptibility to impact fracture.

99explorer is right on. Just to add, what he means by better performance is that the higher modulus graphite has a higher strength to weight ratio. It is stronger, so a rod rated for a given line strength could use less material and thus be lighter. The downside as he mentioned, is that because there is less material used, the walls are thinner and more prone to breaking if treated roughly.
