Who fishes for Alligator Gar, what gear do you use to battle these big brutes?

For the record, I have never CAUGHT an aligator gar, but I have chased them in the Texas. Knowing how big they get, I wasn't particularly shocked when the guide busted out some serious meat sticks. We used Shimano Tallus rods rated for 30 to 50 pound line and Shimano TLD 20 lever-drag reels...stuff I'd use offshore. Long wire leaders, whole menhaden on giant circle hooks and 5 hours of roasting in the sun led to one run-off, but it was fun to dream. One day I'll have my vengeance.
