How do I know when it is time to start crappie fishing?

its not time, its weather. when the sun is hot, crappie will get shallow to warm up ASAP. I was catching them yesterday from shore in 4 ft of water. As long as the sun is heating up whatever is dark in color, most fish, especially crappy, move towards shallow water.

They were biting in Mississippi last week but I have no idea what the weather there might have been but I agree with evspence as per his comment and from what I remember fishing for these fine fish decades ago. Seemed like the hotter the better in some reservoirs and lakes.
