Your best bet would be to head to Wal-Mart, you should be able to find a rod and reel combo for under $50 that will be set up for catfish.

And ugly stick... those things will never break so you will get your use out of them. Everything else on that rod like the line and reel will need changing before the actual rod.

I fish for catfish every week and the berkley big game rods are always getting used and abused and they hold up.

Same can be said for Ugly stick rods, they have a catfish series by uglystick that is a little more expensive, but the traditional Ugly Stick is just as good and will not let you down.
