Joe...read my post. Have you ever fly fished before? The guy is trying to learn A fast action rod is the very WORST rod you could begin with.

I have been fly fishing since the mid 70's and find I use Bass Pro Shops 'Bugger' 5 wt for most of my fishing. You don't mention what your fishing for, but I will suggest this 5 wt, medium action rod loads up just fine and can and will cast smaller flies as well as bass flies within a reasonable casting range of 30-40 feet. The outfit is dirt cheap and the action is great. I also have and Orvis rod and 4 custom made rods, 3 wt, 6 wt, an 8 wt, and a rebuilt customized version of the Bass Pro Shops Bugger, so I actually have two of them.

I would suggest a medium action, 5-6 weight rod. It's a good middle of the road rod and forgiving to beginners. You can get good low cost rod/reel combos from Cabelas or other places. My first was a 5 weight Scientific Anglers rod/reel/line combo. It was less than $200 for the whole outfit and served me well for several years.

Cortland makes good rods but steer clear of their reels. Other than that if you don't wanna break the bank grab a Cortland rod. Also cortland has been around for a while.
