Flip a Texas rig. Match the color of the soft plastic with the color of the bottom of the body of water, ie sandy, muddy, etc. If the water is really murky, go with something a little more flashy.

One of your lures should be the Rebel Popper.
Take the horse hair off of the back of the lure, because you want to work it below the surface.
Tie your line on the upper part of the nose, and try working it 6 to 8 inches below the surface, with a twitch and stop retrieve, allowing it to float back-up to the surface.
Every cast, you will have to make sure the knot is positioned on the upper part of the Poppers nose, to get it down to the 6 or 8 inches.
Deadly for spring and early summer!

Get some Senko worms. They are a little expensive and you can only catch 2 or 3 fish before having to use a new one, but you can not fish them wrong. Great lure for any part of the country.

You can't go wrong with plastic worms. Rig them up withou weight to work shallows, or rig them texas or carolina for a little deeper water. Larger curly tailed grubs retrievd on a lead head work great for me. I like to try to get color that match bait fish, but have also had great luck with dark green.

try fishing near docks and structures. the jitterbug is a great bass lure especially at dusk and the trout magnet workes great for bass as well as trout, and carpie

Some basic lures you could buy are my favorite the jitter bug, they inexpensive and they come in many differt colors. The lure make a trail of bubbles, making it look like a bug swimming. On overcast days I would use a black jitter buy, and on sunny days I would use a red and white jitter bug.

VA is no different from any other state. If your planning on going out at this time of year i would suggest a jig with a trailer on it fished really slow. Come spring time, a spinnerbait will catch you plenty of fish, then in the summer concentrate deep by texas rigging a work or carolina rigging some sort of soft plastic bait.
