A 6'6" Ugly Stick is one of my favorites. I use them with bait casting and spinning reels depending on conditions. They are inexpensive but they work great. They are so flexible that it is difficult to break them. There are certainly better rods but none that will catch more fish and few that are as difficult to break.

After 60 years of bass fishing, that is about all I have left because all the others have broken one way or another. I have been told by a few professional bass fishermen that I should be using a stiffer rod but I have never been told that by one who caught more fish. Last year while trolling for striped bass, I had a very big one hit hard right below the gunnel and wrap a rod completely under the boat like a rope while it was in the rod holder. Not many rods would have survived that treatment and that is why I use them. They are not the fanciest rod ever invented but they work great and keep me fishing all the time.

bought a rod with a wierd name on it at a thrift store for 6 bucks on sale. I have caught a lot of bass. The funny thing also when my buddy broke his 100 dollar rod when we were fishing I offered him mine but he would not use it. Still caught more fish that day then he did.

Like above it all depends on what type of lure/technique you are using... I would suggest getting a combo if you are just starting out, they are usually matched well as far as rod to reel. Just let us know what type of bass fishing you are doing and I am sure you will get several answers.

6ft 6in is definatly the way to go. What brand doesn't matter so much. Just get a quality rod, not a cheap-o. (like the one's for $10 at walmart, although there are times for those) I use a black max and a pfluger baitcasting, and a few quantum spinning reels on Cabelas classic rods. I have been satisfied with these.

it depends on what lure you want to fish with. but if youre just gonna fish all different baits on one rod a 6 feet 6 inch medium or medium heavy carrot stick or a tourny stick are good rods for a good price
