I am heading down to my farm this weekend and was thinking about throwing out some jugs for snapping turtles. I haven't done this since I was a kid. Any sugestions on the type of hook or how far down from the jug I should place the bait.

While I worked hard as a youngster to rid "my" farm pond of these "pests", I now find these prehistoric looking beast as "COOL"! I quite often stop and help the lumbering creatures cross highways rather than be buzzard bait.
A snapper of appreciable size may be quite old! I'm no shrinking violet when dealing with a "pond" nuisance (moccasins mostly), I marvel at these critters!
All I'm asking is find another critter to "whup up on"!

My younger brother caught snapper turtless with a large pole, stuck down into the mud. He used a steel leader and attached meat or chicken to the large weakie hook. When he checked the bait the snapper turtle was floating still alive and mean as hell. He sold them to resturants for snapper soup, my favorite soup.

They are some fine eating Bubba. That is if you want to go through the trouble cleaning them. Most of mine have been caught accidentally on trot lines and jugs or just crossing the road. Softshell turtles aint bad either.
