This is where someone should quote the live bait rule: "Use what lives in the area when it lives in the area. If you can catch it, you can use it." This doesn't apply to the 17-year cicada, which I have in my freezer and use as a grasshopper/cricket alternate.

When you start seeing crickets on your lawn. Or if you see fish hitting bugs on the water surface.

A good time to start fishing crickets is around the beginning of june or when it starts really warming up. Thats about the time most of the bugs start really coming out and the movement of a cricket in the water is irresistable to some fish.

I think it is a good rule to bait with what you see - when you see crickets, bait with crickets.

If you see bugs around your porch lights you can fish with crickets. My friend will tell you that one can always fish with crickets, but then we live in the sunny south.
